Tesla Model Y beats SUV gasoline vehicles in Europe

Tesla Model Y will become the best-selling luxury mid-size SUV in Europe in the first half of 2022, surpassing traditional luxury cars such as Mercedes-Benz GLC and BMW X3 in terms of sales.

Tesla Model Y has been rolling out gradually in European countries since in 2021. Sales have been on the rise ever since.

Tesla Model Y sales in Europe are climbing at a rate that is out of reach.

From January to June 2022 (statistics exclude Finland and Portugal), in the same market segment of the European SUV sales chart 2022, sales of Tesla Model 3 outperform traditionally strong German gasoline vehicles.

Audi Q4 e-tron was the second-best-selling electric mid-size SUV with 11,182 sales and seventh overall ranking. Audi Q4 e-tron lags far behind Model Y, selling just 26% of Tesla’s Model Y, A little more than a quarter.

If the sales of Tesla Model Y maintain the current growth rate, it is likely to become the best-selling luxury model in the European market in 2022. Not just the best-selling luxury electric SUV, but the best-selling model among sedans and gasoline vehicles.

Audi A3 is the Model Y's biggest competitor to achieve this goal. As a luxury compact car, the Audi A3 sold 51,994 units in Europe in the first half of this year.

Tesla Model Y is in high demand in the European market, and sales largely depend on its production capacity. If the Model Y is ordered now in the UK, the expected delivery time is January 2023 to April 2023, which is quite a long wait.

Regarding production capacity, Tesla boss Musk said in July that "by the end of this year or early next year, the Berlin plant's weekly production will increase to 5,000 vehicles from 1,000 in June."

Musk has also said that by the end of 2023, the weekly output of Tesla's Berlin plant will reach 10,000 vehicles, because Tesla's German plant aims to produce 500,000 vehicles per year.

According to analysts, the high-performance version of Model Y is currently produced at Tesla's Berlin plant, while the standard dual-motor version is shipped from Tesla's Shanghai plant. At present, about 20% of the Model Y in the European market comes from the Berlin factory, and 80% comes from the Shanghai factory.
